Patrick Beach & Carling Harps | AWAKENING INVERSIONS: A Practical Exploration of Teaching and Learning Inversions in the Yoga Practice

A journey into the flying side of the Yoga practice. All of the why’s, why not's and how to’s necessary for an inversion practice. In this training you will not only build a new level of comfort in your own inversion practice, but walk away with the tools needed to safely share the joy of going upside down with your students. We will explore two paths in this training - the path of liberating your own practice through the physical efforts needed to build your inversion practice and a path of manifestation - a study of the ideas, alignment, safety techniques, communication skills, and developing a keen eye for looking at bodies to share this knowledge with others. This training will create a shift in your body, mind, and spirit.

Students should have a consistent yoga asana practice but proficiency in inversion postures or a previous 200hr certificate are NOT required, but please come willing to be an active, inquisitive participant.

• Addressing the role of fear and breaking away from preconceived limitations

Carling Harps
Carling is a yoga teacher by devotion and trade, a writer by necessity, a birth doula by unexpected love, and a dabbler in the culinary world of deliciousness by a sheer appreciation of deliciousness. She has been fortunate enough to share the practice and community while teaching workshops, teacher trainings, and wellness retreats across the globe and over the interwebs via platforms like CodyApp/Alo Moves and YouTube. Carling co-owns LA yoga studio, Commune Yoga, with her partner Patrick Beach.

At the core of her teachings, Carling seeks to give students the tools and agency to access their own unique needs, to help them to create new mind-body connections, and allow them to continue to find the center of themselves each time they step on their mats.

Each practice is designed to weave movement and mindfulness through informed sequencing; compassionate, intentional adjustments, and her whole-hearted, down to earth approach.

Foundations of Somatic Stress Release - 5 Day Certification | Dr Scott Lyons

This comprehensive 5 day immersion introduces students to Somatic Stress Release, addressing the underlying psycho-physical patterns associated with stress while promoting well-being through the lens of body-oriented therapies.

Stress related health challenges are now a widespread global issue. Chronic stress wreaks havoc on our health, impacts biological energy conservation, and makes us less attuned to the need for self-care. When a person encounters stress they form neuromuscular patterns to manage and protect themselves from the situation. A person maintains this activation even after the stressor is eliminated. This behavior prevents them from properly processing or mobilizing the stress. Similarly, individuals can get trapped in thought cycles which continually activate a physiological response, limiting their tolerance and capacity to manage additional stressors.

A physiological stress response happens throughout every system of the body, ultimately interacting with every cell. It’s no wonder that stress responses are interwoven with our emotions, immune function, thoughts, breath, and movements . Somatic Stress Release is a holistic approach that recognizes the complex layering of each individual's relation to stress. Stress manifests itself in each person’s body differently. Understanding this unique body response allows each person to process and navigate the intricate layers of stress. One of the most effective pathways towards that awareness and negotiation is through feeling a deeper sense of and connection with the body-mind, an approach called somatics.

In this somatic approach there is a recognition that we engage with others and the world through sensations and movement. As stress is something experienced and expressed through the body, a somatic or body-focused approach can more quickly address habitual responses to internal and external stressors.

In addition to utilizing body-based stress release techniques, this immersion will also integrate experiential anatomy and physiology, mind-body medicine techniques, elements of cognitive-behavioral therapy, Neuro-Linguistic Programing, movement meditations, and yoga nidra.

In this immersion you will:

  • Gain a deeper understanding of the biological, social, and psychological aspects of stress.

  • Identify somatic symptoms and triggers for emotional and physical distress.

  • Learn to work with stress as it is reflected in facial expressions, posture, muscular pattern, or other forms of body language.

  • Learn cognitive reframing and stress tolerance techniques.

  • Explore self hypnosis for relaxation.

  • Learn neuromuscular repatterning procedures to release unconscious habituated stress cycles.

  • Identify yours and other’s resources for negotiating stress.

  • Learn embodied mindfulness and resilience training techniques.

  • Engage in movement meditations and breath work to release trapped or stored arousal energy.

  • Stop burnout and rebuild depleted biological resources.

  • Learn to take control of your relationship to stress in order to live a life of greater well-being.

  • Apply manual-therapy techniques to guided meditation.

*Participants will receive a certificate in Foundations of Somatic Stress Release and may receive 35 hours of CEU’s from the Yoga Alliance.

*Two online support sessions will be offered after the training to help participants integrate the material.

*This foundations certification is open to anyone (i.e yoga teachers, therapists, parents, teachers, etc) who wishes to address stress from a multidisciplinary holistic approach.

Dr. Scott Lyons is dedicated to teaching embodiment as a way of exploring human development, healing, growth and transformation. His deep passion is to integrate somatic practices, transpersonal inquiry and scholarly research into the creative and healing arts.

Scott is a Clinical Psychologist and Mind-Body Medicine practitioner who specializes in therapies for infants, youth, and adults. He is a Certified Body-Mind Centering Teacher and Practitioner, Cranio-Sacral Therapist, Visceral Manipulation Therapist, Neuro-Developmental Therapist, Infant Developmental Movement Educator, Registered Movement Therapist and Educator, Trauma Therapist, Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, Thai Massage Practitioner, Clinical Hypnotherapist, Mindfulness-based Executive Coach, Experiential Anatomy/ Developmental Movement and Yoga Practitioner, and a 500-hour registered yoga teacher. Additionally he holds a BFA in Theater/Psychology, MFA in Dance/Choreography, MS in Clinical Psychology, and a PhD in Clinical Psychology and Mind-Body Medicine.

Flow State with Tara Judelle | Flow

This workshop series is designed to help bring practitioners into a state of flow. We'll be working in arenas in the body that are proven to relate to optimal states of flow similar to musicians being in the pocket or athletes being "in the zone". There will be asana, meditation, free movement and partner work, all with the intention of delivering us into the state of flow that creates an easeful, optimal dance through life.

Flow

Pouring ourselves into moment to moment presence allows the full spectrum of our awareness to be harnessed by what we are doing. The subject and object in states of flow can merge, creating a time/space blur. Moving our meditation into movement gives us a repeatable practice to glide with more presence and ease through transitions.

We'll be working in arenas in the body that are proven to relate to optimal states of flow similar to musicians being in the pocket or athletes being "in the zone". There will be asana, meditation, free movement and partner work, all with the intention of delivering us into the state of flow that creates an easeful, optimal dance through life.

Reciprocity

The bridge between our individual self and the outer environment. This class looks at creating a three-dimensional container of self, finding support in both inner and outer space. We will play through arm balances and backbends in flow, creating buoyancy and integrity through the feedback that keeps the inner and outer environments in constant knowing of one another.

A weekend with Clive Sheridan

Clive will start each daily session with an invigorating and energising all-round Asana practice, with a particular focus on the breath. This will be followed by a meditative exploration of essential Pranayama rhythms, guided with Clive’s sensitive insight acquired over many years of exploration. A Satsang sharing will complete each day, where we will lovingly inquire into our potential to awaken the heart from its emotional veils, and free the mind from its tendency for confusion, thus ultimately fulfilling our Yogic life.

Following Clive’s first overland journey from Europe to India in 1966, he was ‘called’ onto the path of Yoga. Over the following years he travelled extensively in India, and alongside the physical exploration of Asana & Pranayama, he became immersed in devotional meditation to the Goddess in all our hearts. Meeting his very wild and uncompromising spiritual mentor in the late 1980’s in West Bengal, this devotion became merged in self inquiry into the true nature of the mind. Through the highest Blessings of the great Mother, and with the grace of the Guru, Clive was blessed with a precious liberation beyond the mind a few years later.

Module 2: Hatha Yoga Pradipika

What is the origin of Hatha Yoga? What is the mysterious Kundalini? How can I experience it and how will that help me in my practice? What is unique about the human body? How can yoga help me to understand my body? Above all, how can these teachings help me to deepen my practice? These are some of the questions that we are going to explore in this seminar. Starting from a Tantric basis, Hatha Yoga represents a radical approach in which the body is not an obstacle for spiritual life, but rather the very vehicle for the refinement of our awareness and the development
of the connection with the world and with our own selves, to the deepest possible level. This seminar offers a fascinating journey through the secret “anatomy” revealed by the Tantric masters and will also unveil several potent exercises to power our daily practice.

About Carlos Pomeda

Originally from Madrid, Spain, Carlos has been steeped in all aspects of the yoga tradition during more than 40 years of practice and study. He spent 18 of those years as a monk of the Saraswati order, under the name Swami Gitananda, including 9 years of traditional training and practice in India. During this time he learned the various systems of Indian Philosophy and immersed himself in the practice of yoga, becoming one of the senior monks of the tradition and teaching meditation and philosophy to tens of thousands of students around the world. He combines this experience and traditional training with his academic background, which includes two Masters Degrees: one in Sanskrit, from U.C. Berkeley (where he has taught) and another one, in Religious Studies, from U.C. Santa Barbara. He is currently working on a book on the topic of “Karma and the Journey of the Soul”, as well as a new translation of the Śivasūtra, an important Tantric text of the Kashmiri tradition . Carlos currently lives in the US, and travels extensively around the world conducting a variety of retreats, courses, seminars, workshops and lectures on the Wisdom of Yoga and related subjects. As a teacher, Carlos is renowned for the breadth of his knowledge and the clarity with which he conveys it. Yoga Alliance

Module 1: History, Evolution and Methodology of Yoga

We invite you to dive into the secret wisdom of the ancient yoga texts. This seminar will lead us through the tantalizing history of yoga, exploring its development and the subtleties we can learn and apply to our practice. Answer your questions about the origin and development of yoga, its main schools and teachings, its approaches and the way they inform our current practice. Carlos will lead us through an exploration of the many forms of yoga that have developed throughout history, drawing gems of inspiration and practice that we can immediately apply to our lives. One fruit of the workshop will be a thorough understanding of the differences and peculiarities of the various forms of yoga (Raja yoga, Karma yoga, Mantra yoga, Laya yoga, etc.), as well as the various contexts in which they arose. Adam Whiting | In the Footsteps of Ganesh

Ganesh is one of the most well-known and worshipped deities in the Hindu tradition. Easily recognizable with his elephant head, tray full of sweets, broken tusk and big belly; Ganesh is commonly known as the destroyer of obstacles. In this workshop, we will explore some of the lesser known attributes of this divine elephant who is also the god of beginnings, the arts and intelligence. Adam Whiting | Divine Poetry

The sages of yoga tell us that our essential nature is truth, joy and bliss. Our separation from that bliss is due to our entanglement in the peaks and valleys of this human experience. Mantra is a potent and powerful tool that can act as a bridge to take the practitioner over the fluctuations of the external world and reconnect them to consciousness within.

In this workshop we will weave strong asana and mindful mantra together to tune the body, breath, mind and voice to come together in a clear and purposeful harmony. We will wade in the waters of Mantra Vidya, or the science of Mantra. Part discussion, part all-levels asana practice, and part Kirtan; we will converse with the intellect, the heart and the body to truly feel the power of this ancient practice.

Yoga Fundamentals | Cassie Lee

One of the primary intentions of a yoga practice is to help us feel more connected to ourselves through the experience of our body, but sometimes a yoga class can leave us more confused and disconnected. We don't immediately know where our various body parts are (what is a sit bone?), what the words mean (what language is that anyway, why aren't the poses always in English?) and whether all bodies can and should move in the way the teacher is suggesting?

Our Yoga Fundamentals workshop will explain this and much more. If you are interested in learning the how to do basic yoga postures and common sequences, as well as why it matters that your awareness is embedded into the experience, then come along prepared to move a bit, learn a bit and grow a bit. Please feel free to submit requests or questions beforehand. Both beginners and more experienced students welcome.

Understanding Women's Health & Hormones from an Ayurvedic Perspective | Dr. Claudia Welch

In this weekend, Dr. Welch explores the root causes of many fundamental health concerns of women, helps us understand hormonal changes, breast health, infertility and other considerations from a perspective that combines Ayurveda, nadi theory and Western science.

In the modern world stress is affecting each of us in surprising ways. It is a major culprit in hormonal imbalance and is at the root of most women’ s health concerns. Over the course of this weekend, we will learn simple approaches to understanding stress and sex hormones, and apply Ayurvedic nadi theory to practically address hormonal balance through breathing techniques.

Please wear comfortable clothes. We will not be doing asana, but we may be spending about an hour each day doing practical exercises for the cultivation of prana.

This seminar is designed to complement to the information presented in Dr. Welch's 'Balance Your Hormones, Balance Your Life: Achieving Optimal Health and Wellness through Ayurveda, Chinese Medicine, and Western Science', but it is not necessary to have read it before attending.

Negotiating Stress - an Embodied Perspective | Dr Scott Lyons

The art of any negotiation entails fully knowing your opponent and gaining the skills and techniques to navigate the journey towards manifesting what you desire. In this workshop, the opponent that is being addressed is stress. Stress related health challenges have now become a pandemic. Long-term, continual stress creates havoc on our well-being and can make us less sensitive to our self-care needs. Our negotiation with stress begins with an understanding of how it makes us feel and react. Utilizing movement, mind-body medicine explorations, and lectures, we will explore the multi-layered aspects of stress.

In this workshop you will:
· Gain a deeper understanding of the biological, social, and psychological aspects of stress
· Identify your resources for negotiating stress
· Learn to scan and listen to your body’s cues for both symptoms and remedies of stress

Dr. Scott Lyons is dedicated to teaching embodiment as a way of exploring human development, healing, growth and transformation. His deep passion is to integrate somatic practices, transpersonal inquiry and scholarly research into the creative and healing arts.

Scott is a Clinical Psychologist and Mind-Body Medicine practitioner who specializes in therapies for infants, youth, and adults. He is a Certified Body-Mind Centering Teacher and Practitioner, Cranio-Sacral Therapist, Visceral Manipulation Therapist, Neuro-Developmental Therapist, Infant Developmental Movement Educator, Registered Movement Therapist and Educator, Trauma Therapist, Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, Thai Massage Practitioner, Clinical Hypnotherapist, Mindfulness-based Executive Coach, Experiential Anatomy/ Developmental Movement and Yoga Practitioner, and a 500-hour registered yoga teacher. For this approach, healing is the process of returning to the felt sense of wholeness through the integration of support, expression, and movement.

This workshop will be an introduction to this experiential model for psychophysical healing and self discovery. This approach utilizes evidence-based practices and research in the field of somatics, biology, sociology, psychology, manual therapy, and spirituality to increase awareness and attention to inner sensations and subtleties of one sense of self, establish clarity and efficiency of movement patterns, unpack and process emotions in a way that promotes resiliency, and cultivates a deeper connection to the natural world.

Dr. Scott Lyons is dedicated to teaching embodiment as a way of exploring human development, healing, growth and transformation. His deep passion is to integrate somatic practices, transpersonal inquiry and scholarly research into the creative and healing arts.

Scott is a Clinical Psychologist and Mind-Body Medicine practitioner who specializes in therapies for infants, youth, and adults. He is a Certified Body-Mind Centering Teacher and Practitioner, Cranio-Sacral Therapist, Visceral Manipulation Therapist, Neuro-Developmental Therapist, Infant Developmental Movement Educator, Registered Movement Therapist and Educator, Trauma Therapist, Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, Thai Massage Practitioner, Clinical Hypnotherapist, Mindfulness-based Executive Coach, Experiential Anatomy/ Developmental Movement and Yoga Practitioner, and a 500-hour registered yoga teacher. Body-Mind Baby | Dr Scott Lyons

BodyMind Baby developmental movement education classes help facilitate optimal brain and body development for babies from birth to walking age. The classes are an innovative blend of body-mind philosophy and developmental movement education to build the brain, body, and joy of each baby.

This workshop will help with digestive problems, sleep issues, comfort and soothing, chronic crying, colic, birth stress as well as providing parents with a place to come together and share challenges and successes with their babies.

About Lizzie
Raised in San Francisco and trained as a designer, Lizzie Lasater is a yoga creative. She teaches yoga internationally and produces online trainings. Lizzie sometimes jokes that yoga ”runs in the family" because her Mom, Judith Hanson Lasater co-founded Yoga Journal magazine and has been teaching since 1971. Adam Whiting | From Fight to Flight: Unlocking the Handstand

Let’s strip it down and focus our attention solely on standing on our hands. In this 3-hour workshop we will investigate a multitude of aspects that allow us to hold a safe and stable handstand.

The feet, the hips, the core, the shoulder girdle, the wrists and hands all play an important role in getting and staying upside down. We’ll open, strengthen and integrate through an intelligent flow of foundational poses to build the strength and body awareness needed to fly. We’ll then move towards wall-work, partner work, and ultimately to solo flight.

All levels are welcome and variations and modifications will be given to beginners and seasoned handstanders alike.

About Adam
One of the first things that people recognize of Adam Whiting is his laugh. Students say that they can hear it rolling down the street as they approach the studio to practice one of his classes. His smile is generous and immediate and his passion for yoga is contagious. Adam leads classes, workshops and trainings that are full of anatomical precision, intelligent sequencing, and potent philosophy. He has practiced and trained in various styles of yoga, including Tantra, Ashtanga, Anusara and Vinyasa. His musical training is integrated throughout his teachings in spirited kirtans and soft serenades in savasana.

Since 2014, Adam has been living in Sydney, Australia teaching as the Lead Facilitator for Power Living Australia Yoga. In the three years he has been in Australia, Adam has headlined Wanderlust yoga festivals, celebrated World Yoga Day by practicing asana on top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, sang Kirtan at the Sydney Opera House, taught workshops all over Australia and New Zealand, and guided hundreds of students through 200 and 500 Hour teacher training programs. In January of 2018, Adam will be returning to the United States to continue to travel and teach while leading Teacher Trainings and various events at Charlotte Yoga.
